Bonny Doon Beach
The ink painting with the longest exposure was done on the West Coast, in Carmel-by-the-Sea, in 2017.
Carmel — once a remote artists’ village — continues to attract people because of its magnificent coastline. The light here seems more saturated and vibrant. Looking at those photos reminds me of a former art teacher who, while gazing out into the Pacific, helped me see all the subtle variations of color the ocean was made of.
On that day, I sat on the beach for hours in meditative stillness, observing how the place slowly unfolded. Amidst the movement all around me, a fisher and the waves remained with me — held in stillness, anchored in this place.
There was movement, and a deep appreciation for nature all around me.
The ink painting Carmel-by-the-Sea developed over the course of a week and became a valued memory of that day.
